Applications which are processed by the police

Most applications for a residence card which are handed in in Norway are processed by the police. Please ask the police about waiting time when you hand in the application.

If the police cannot process your application themselves, they will send it to the UDI. If the police send your application to the UDI you will be notified by email or SMS.

Applications which are processed by the UDI

From week 37 to week 43, we will not prioritise processing applications for residence cards. During this period, we will be processing other types of applications.

From week 44 to week 47, we will be processing applications for residence cards that were submitted before 1 October 2024. However, we cannot guarantee that you will receive an answer to your application now, even if it was submitted before this date.

How long you have to wait may change.  We update the information on this page once a month.

Information for you who have received a rejection and have appealed

Today it normally takes 3 months from UDI receives your appeal until we make a decision. Then we will either grant your appeal and give you a residence card, or forward your case to the Immigration Appeals Board (UNE) for consideration.

If we forward it to UNE, you will be notified by email or SMS. You can find information about UNE’s waiting time on their website (external website).
