UDI is processing asylum applications from Afghans again

The temporary suspension of the duty to return to Afghanistan will be lifted from 1 March. UDI will assess each asylum case individually in light of the changed conditions in the country.

The immigration authorities are now lifting the temporary suspension because the situation in some areas is more clarified than when the return ban was introduced six months ago.

But that does not mean it is safe for everyone to return to the country. Utlendingsnemnda writes in its briefing (external website) that there is still an extensive need to obtain updated information about the situation in Afghanistan.

Afghans who got a final rejection and had the duty to leave Norway before the suspension was introduced in July, have the right to ask Utlendingsnemnda to reconsider their case in light of the changed situation in the country (request for reversal).

Those who request such a reversal, and who are granted deferred implementation, are allowed to stay in Norway until their case has been reconsidered.

In assessing the further political, security, human rights and humanitarian developments in the country, the immigration authorities rely on a wide range of sources from EUAA (formerly EASO) (external website), other European countries, reports from Norwegian special envoys for immigration matters and knowledge from Landinfo (external website).
