Training and tests in the Norwegian language for people applying for a permanent residence permit


In order to be granted a permanent residence permit, you must normally complete training and pass tests in the Norwegian language and social studies. Please check which rules apply to you.

How old are you?: 16–54 years

When were you granted your first residence permit that forms a basis for a permanent residence permit?: 1 January 2016 or later

What type of residence permit do you currently hold? : other type of residence permit

What kind of Norwegian language education have you taken? : have taken fewer than 550 hours of tuition in the Norwegian language and have not been have been awarded an assessment grade in Norwegian from lower or upper secondary education

Have you passed the Norwegian language test: oral, listening, reading and written presentation, at minimum A2 level? : yes, I have passed all four parts: oral, listening, reading and written presentation

What kind of social studies education have you taken? : have not taken a course or been awarded an assessment grade in social studies from lower or upper secondary education

Have you passed the social studies test? : yes, in Norwegian

1. You do not have to complete training in the Norwegian language

Based on your answers, you do not have to complete a Norwegian language training programme.

Please remember to submit documentation that you have passed all the four parts of the Norwegian language test at minimum A2 level: oral, listening, reading and written presentation, when you go to the police.

2. You do not have to complete training in social studies

Based on your answers, you are not required to complete instruction in social studies.

Please remember to submit documentation that you have passed the social studies test in Norwegian when you meet with the police.

3. You meet the Norwegian language test requirement 

Based on your answers, you fulfil the requirement for having passed a Norwegian language test at minimum A1 level.

Remember to bring the test certificate with you when you meet with the police to submit your application. 

4. You have passed the social studies test

Based on your answers, you meet the requirement for having passed a social studies test.
