Digital mailbox

If you have a digital mailbox, you do not have to wait for our letter to be sent by ordinary post. You can save up to two weeks' waiting time if you have a digital mailbox.
When you choose a digital mailbox, you will no longer receive letters from us by ordinary post. The digital mailbox is free to set up and use.
To create a digital mailbox account, you need the following:
- A Norwegian personal identity number or a D-number.
- A user profile in ID-porten (external website).
- An electronic ID such as BankID to log in to ID-porten. Your Norwegian bank will provide you with a BankID (external website).
You can also log in to ID-porten using the electronic IDs Buypass (external website) or Commfides (external website).
Because of these requirements, not everyone can have a digital mailbox. For example, you cannot have one if you have never lived in Norway. If you do not have a digital mailbox, you will receive your letters from the UDI by regular post.

What is a digital mailbox?
- A digital mailbox is a website where you can log in and read letters from the UDI and other Norwegian public agencies.

How do I get a digital mailbox?
- Go to norge.no (external website).
- Choose which digital mailbox you want – Digipost or e-Boks.
- Follow the instructions at norge.no.
- Once you have created a digital mailbox account, we and other public agencies will start sending letters to your digital mailbox.

How will I know when I have received new letters?
You will be notified by SMS or e-mail when a new letter is available in your digital mailbox.

Is a digital mailbox the same as a normal e-mail account?
Digital mail is not the same as e-mail. When we send you digital mail, it is much more secure than a normal e-mail. We can therefore send you letters there that we could not have sent you by normal e-mail.
You have to log into your digital mailbox to read your digital mail.

Do I have to have a digital mailbox?
No. You do not have to have a digital mailbox. If you do not wish to have a digital mailbox, you will receive letters in your normal letter box at home.
If you can, we recommend that you create a digital mailbox account.

Can I let other people read my digital mail?
Yes, if you want someone else to be able to open your letters, you can give them access to your digital mailbox (external website). For example, you can give access to your spouse or children.
The person you want to give access to must also have a digital mailbox. For someone to be able to have their own mailbox, they have to be over the age of 15.
Only you can give someone else access to your mailbox. If you have given someone access to your mailbox, and you no longer want them to have access, you can retract your permission.

Does the digital mailbox have any consequences for the deadlines for appealing?
There is a three-week deadline for appealing decisions made by the UDI. The same deadline applies regardless of whether you have a digital mailbox and you receive your decision there, or whether we send you our decision as a normal letter by post.
If you have a digital mailbox, it means that you have to appeal within three weeks of receiving the e-mail or SMS notifying you that the decision is in the mailbox.
Once you have been notified that you have received a letter, it is your own responsibility to read the letter.
