Digital and attendance-free services - notification of Norwegian citizenship for Nordic citizens

Nordic citizens can now digitally submit a simplified notification of Norwegian citizenship without having to book an appointment with the police.

The service means that you, as a citizen of a Nordic country, can log in to the application portal using your eID to fill in the application form (external website). The application form retrieves your national ID number from the ID Portal (ID-porten), as well as some personal information from the National Population Register (Folkeregisteret). The information is filled in automatically in the form.

Do you qualify to submit a simplified notification of citizenship?

The answers you give to the questions in the application form determine whether you should submit a simplified notification or a full application for Norwegian citizenship for Nordic citizens. If you qualify to submit a simplified notification of Norwegian citizenship, you can choose whether you want to submit the notification digitally without having to attend an appointment with the police. You can still choose to submit the notification by attending an appointment with the police, but then it will take longer before you get a response, because you have to wait for an available appointment with the police.

How to submit a simplified notification of citizenship digitally

In order for the notification to be submitted digitally without you having to attend an appointment with the police, you must log in to the application portal using your eID. At the same time, it is important that you have the criminal record certificate ready, preferably as a PDF file, when you fill in the application form. The criminal record certificate must be no older than 3 months when you submit the notification. If you already have a criminal record certificate, and it is older than 3 months, you can order a criminal record certificate here (external website)

You upload the police certificate immediately after you have submitted the application form and paid the fee. This is why it is important that you have the criminal record certificate ready when you fill in the form. If you ordered the criminal record certificate electronically, we recommend that you upload the PDF file you were sent. You can also upload the criminal record certificate in the file formats .jpg, .jpeg, .odt, .docx, .doc, .txt, .png and .bmp. However, if you do not upload the police certificate as a PDF file, the waiting time will be longer before you get a response.

After you have uploaded the criminal record certificate and paid the fee, you will receive a receipt that the notification has been delivered. There is nothing more you need to do.

What happens after you have submitted the simplified notification of citizenship?

The simplified notification is sent to UDI, which creates an automatic case. The automatic case management system assesses the notification that has been received. You can read more about automatic processing of applications here.
