How do I apply?

You must contact the police and request protection.

To apply for protection, you must be in Norway or at the Norwegian border, where you can apply for protection with the police.

Where do I find the police?

To apply for protection with the police, you can:

  • tell the border police that you want to apply for protection (asylum),
  • show up at the police station where you are, or
  • show up at the National Arrivals Centre at Råde

The police will help you with transportation to the National Arrival Centre. To register your application for protection, the National Police Immigration Service (NPIS) will have a conversation with you at the National Arrival Centre. You will receive a card that shows you have applied for protection.

You arrive at the National Arrival Centre.

You will stay at the National Arrival Centre for up to 21 days, and there are many steps to go through. You will, among other things:

  • have a conversation with the police
  • provide personal information
  • give your fingerprint and picture
  • provide passports and other ID documents
  • be tested for tuberculosis and conduct other health examinations

Can you work before your application is processed?

Norway has several different procedures for asylum applicants

  • If you are from a country where inhabitants can get help from their own authorities, your asylum application will be rejected within 48 hours. 
  • If you have been in another European country before coming to Norway, you will be sent back to that country. This is in accordance with the Dublin procedure, which sets out that the country you are sent back to is responsible for considering your asylum case. In these cases, you will not be interviewed by UDI.
  • If you have previously been granted protection in a different country that is safe, you may be informed that you need to return to that country without UDI processing your application.
  • If you commit a crime and do not need protection, UDI will reject your asylum application fairly quickly.
  • All other applicants will have their applications processed pursuant to the normal procedure. Information about waiting times for those who have applied for protection (asylum).
