Want to renew Study permit

If you have a residence permit that can be renewed, it is important that you apply for renewal well in advance of your residence permit expiring.

You need to do the following

If you are applying using eID (electronic ID)

If you are applying using eID, you should register your application online, pay the fee, and upload your documents online no later than one month before your permit expires. You do not need to attend an appointment with the police.

If you are applying using a username and password

If you are applying with a username and password (not logging in with eID), you should register your application online and pay the fee well before your permit expires — preferably two to three months in advance. You must also book an appointment to submit your documents at the police station. Waiting times for appointments with the police can be long. You can read more here about your rights if you are applying for a renewal but cannot get an appointment in time.

When is my application considered submitted?

Uploading documents electronically (eID)

Your application is considered submitted when you have paid the fee, uploaded your documents, and submitted the application. If you do this at least one month before your current permit expires, you retain the rights granted by your current permit while you wait for a decision. It is important that you upload all documents listed on the checklist.

Submitting documents to the police

Your application is considered submitted when you attend your booked appointment with the police and hand in your documents. It is important that you bring all documents listed on the checklist to the appointment. If you hold a residence permit that can be renewed, and you attend the police appointment and submit your renewal application at least one month before your current permit expires, you will retain the same rights as those granted by your current permit.

Have you made plans to travel abroad?

Please note that you may have trouble traveling in and out of Norway while waiting for your new permit. This is because you do not have a valid residence card when your residence permit has expired. Without a residence card, you can be stopped by border control in other countries. You may also have trouble getting into Norway again when you return.
