Notifications of citizenship for Nordic citizens

If you submitted the notification and documents to the police, it will normally take 3 months from the time you submitted the notification until you receive an answer on your application.

If you submitted the notification digitally and were not required to meet in person with the police, it will normally take 3 months to receive an answer after you submit the notification.

If your case is automated, and you submitted the notification and documents to the police, you will receive an answer when the police have sent the case to UDI.

If your case is automated, and you submitted the notification and documents digitially and were not required to meet in person with the police, you will receive an answer when UDI has received the notification. 

Automatic processing of applications

In August 2020, we introduced "Automatic processing" for notifications of Norwegian citizenship. This means that your case will be evaluated for automatic processing.

Currently, about 70% of notifications are processed automatically. If your notification is processed by a caseworker, it does not mean anything is wrong with your case. It just means that the system is not able to evaluate the notification automatically. In that case, the waiting time above will apply to you.

You do not need to contact us to check if or why your notification was not automated. If we lack information from you to process the notification, we will contact you.

The system starts when we receive the notification. The case is either completed automatically or assigned for processing by caseworker.

If you do not meet the requirements for Norwegian citizenship and your notification is flagged for rejection, your case will always be processed by a caseworker.

Notifications of citizenship for children with a Norwegian father

It will usually take 3 months to receive a reply after you deliver your documents to the police or Norwegian foreign service mission.
