Do my children have the right to attend school or kindergarten while I wait for the answer on my application for protection?

Right to attend school

Your children have the right to attend school. This applies whether your application is to be assessed for collective protection or individual protection. The right to attend school applies to your children from the age of 6 years until 16. If you are a parent to a child under 16, you are obligated to send your child to school.

The right to attend school applies as long as it is likely that you will stay in Norway for more than three months. Talk to the employees at the asylum reception centre or the municipality where you live for help with signing your children up for school.

Right to kindergarten

Young children will often be offered a place in a municipal kindergarten. If the municipality cannot provide placement, then the reception centre is to arrange an activity room for children over 2 years of age.
