Corona restrictions and Brexit
If you are a UK national or a citizen of another country resident in the United Kingdom, you will find information here on how corona restrictions may affect you from 1 January 2021.
This will happen until 31 December 2020
Until 31 December 2020, there will be a transition period and the regulations for UK nationals that visit, live and work in Norway are exactly the same as before.
You still have to use the registration scheme for EU/EEU-citizens when you are going to stay in Norway for more than three months, and you can apply for permanent right of residence in Norway if you have been here for more than five years. We encourage all UK nationals and their family members to make sure they are registered correctly.
You can also apply for Norwegian citizenship as before. Norway allows dual citizenship now.
Norway will make a new type of residency permit for UK nationals that move to Norway before 31 December 2020. When the application form for that is ready, you must fill it out on our websites and meet with the police again.
You cannot apply for the new kind of residency permit yet. You will have plenty of time to apply. Meanwhile, you will have the right to stay in Norway, just as before.
If you are coming to Norway after 31 December 2020
If you are moving to Norway after 31 December 2020, you have to apply for residency permit according to the regulations for citizens of countries outside EU/EEU, similar to what for example American citizens do. There are several types of residency permits: residency permit for work immigration, residency permit for family immigration, residency permit for studies, and residency permit for au pair.
You will still be able to visit Norway for 90 days without a visa or residency permit after 31 December 2020, but you will usually not be allowed to work when you visit. If you are going to work, you usually have to apply for a residency permit.
